All countries must choose between the US or Iran, Bessent said, and poverty will be the punishment for those who fail to choose Washington.
The fate of “those who tether themselves to Tehran is the foreclosure of any path to lasting prosperity”, he said.

Extreme Sanctions
All countries must stop immediately all business with Iranians, Bessent insists, with details of extreme sanctions to be announced this morning.
“The world should understand that our objective is to sever every economic lifeline that sustains the tyrannical regime until Tehran stands alone … As a great wave of American resolve comes ashore, are Iran’s enablers willing to wager their future against it?” he wrote.
“At dawn begins an economic D-Day — the single greatest financial offensive ever marshalled against an adversary,” his essay said.
In Pentagonspeak, nations designated as “targets” are described as “adversaries”.
But Bessent gets one thing right. He says “a corrupt regime has consigned what would be one of the world’s strongest economies to ruin”. Which is, of course, a good description of how the US has at least tried to demolish a thriving country with a proud history.
All sides want the US attack to stop
In 1953, the US famously removed Iran’s democratically elected leader and replaced him with a CIA-MI6 puppet who would channel the country’s oil wealth into US and UK pockets.
Iranians complained about this, and the US responded by slapping them with 47 years of unfair sanctions.
More recently, the US launched an illegal war on Iran at the behest of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on February 28, starting with the killing of more than 100 children at a primary school.
